Partnering for safer tomorrow
Estonia's maritime security, defence capabilities and industrial development are increasingly interconnected. In the Baltic Sea region, where the protection of critical maritime infrastructure is a shared responsibility, close cooperation between allied nations and trusted industry partners is essential. As members of the European Union and NATO, Estonia and Sweden share common security interests and face similar security challenges.
The Nordic and Baltic region is a key focus of Saab's long-term strategy. For decades, Saab has worked closely with partners across the region to strengthen security, industrial cooperation and allied capabilities through advanced defence solutions, local engagement and sustainable capability development. This approach supports operational resilience while contributing to NATO's collective deterrence and security objectives.
Saab's partnership with Estonia spans more than two decades. Since the first deliveries of Saab equipment to Estonia in the late 1990s, the company has established a strong presence within the Estonian defence sector. Today, the Estonian Armed Forces operate a range of Saab systems, including the Carl-Gustaf® weapon system, Giraffe air surveillance radars and advanced training solutions that support operational readiness and interoperability. Most recently, Estonia placed an order for Giraffe 1X multi-mission surveillance radars, further strengthening the partnership.
Saab's commitment extends beyond current programmes. The company continues to support Estonia's defence modernisation efforts and is engaged in several ongoing procurement initiatives, including Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS). Saab's portfolio also offers opportunities in areas such as passive electronic warfare, weapon-locating systems and signature management capabilities.
At Defence Week Estonia, Saab will highlight how advanced technologies, industrial cooperation and long-term partnerships can contribute to stronger regional security. The company will focus on solutions that support the protection of critical maritime infrastructure and maritime security in the Baltic Sea region, including the role of Littoral Mission Vessels in enhancing situational awareness and operational readiness. Saab will also present capabilities that support stronger air defence and increased national resilience in response to evolving security challenges.
Through innovation, collaboration and a commitment to long-term partnerships, Saab continues to support Estonia's defence ambitions while contributing to security, resilience and technological leadership across the Baltic Sea region.
At Defence Week Estonia, Saab will focus on how advanced defence capabilities can contribute to a stronger, more secure, and more resilient Baltic Sea region.
A key topic will be the protection of critical maritime infrastructure and the role of modern Littoral Mission Vessels (LMV) in enhancing maritime security, situational awareness, and operational readiness. As security challenges in the region continue to evolve, maintaining awareness and freedom of operation at sea is becoming increasingly important.
Building Naval Capabilities Through Industrial Cooperation
Strengthening maritime security in the Baltic Sea region requires more than advanced platforms and technologies, it demands long-term industrial partnerships, resilient supply chains, and sustainable national capabilities. Saab's approach to naval capability development is built on close cooperation with customers and local industry. A strong example is the Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV) developed for the Republic of Singapore Navy. Designed by Saab and built by ST Engineering, eight vessels were successfully delivered between 2017 and 2020, demonstrating the maturity, operational reliability, and adaptability of the design.
Constructed with a steel hull and a lightweight carbon-fibre composite superstructure, the LMV combines durability, performance, and operational flexibility. The platform can be equipped with a range of Saab naval systems, including:
- 9LV Combat Management System,
- Sea Giraffe Multi-Sensor Solution,
- Electronic Warfare Suite,
- Trackfire Remote Weapon Station, and
- Saab's Lightweight Integrated Mast and Superstructure.
Together, these systems provide a modern and highly capable solution for maritime security operations.
At the core of Saab's naval offering is a modular design philosophy. This enables systems to be upgraded, replaced, or expanded as operational requirements evolve, simplifying future modernisation efforts and creating opportunities for local industry participation throughout the platform's lifecycle. Such an approach supports both operational flexibility and long-term national capability development.
Equally important is the ability to maintain operational readiness throughout the lifetime of the platform. Saab places significant emphasis on security of supply, ensuring that critical systems remain available and fully operational during both peacetime and crisis situations. Local maintenance capabilities, rapid access to spare parts, and efficient support networks are integral parts of Saab's industrial cooperation model.
In the Baltic Sea region, where resilience and readiness are increasingly important, Saab's approach strengthens not only naval capabilities but also national security. By combining proven naval solutions with industrial cooperation, local competence development, and robust support arrangements, Saab contributes to enhanced interoperability, operational effectiveness, and long-term security for allied nations.
Saab will also highlight capabilities that support stronger air defence and national resilience. As evolving threats place increasing demands on mobility and responsiveness, solutions such as MSHORAD combine radar, command and control, and effectors into an integrated capability designed to protect forces and critical assets against emerging aerial threats.
Today’s battlefield is more transparent than ever. Advanced sensors, drones and precision-guided weapons are making it increasingly difficult to operate undetected, while evolving threats demand greater firepower, mobility and adaptability from dismounted forces. Success depends on the ability to survive, maneuver and engage effectively. At Defence Week Estonia, we will showcase how camouflage, concealment and deception (CCD) solutions, combined with advanced ground combat capabilities, help armed forces enhance survivability, reduce detectability and maintain a decisive tactical advantage. Together, these capabilities enable soldiers to adapt quickly, overcome complex threats and accomplish their mission with confidence.
Drawing on decades of experience in the Nordic and Baltic region, Saab remains committed to supporting Estonia's defence ambitions through long-term partnerships, local industry cooperation, and sustainable capability development. By combining advanced technologies with local expertise, Saab contributes to strengthening national defence and enhancing regional security.
